Empty homes need to be utilised
With communities minister Andrew Stunnell celebrating the fact that
the number of homes in the UK which lie empty have dropped by the
largest amount since 2004, it is now imperative that the remainder
of empty housing is put to use.
According to the latest government figures, 21,000 homes which had
lain empty were inhabited again in the last 12 months.
However, the Guardian reports that there are still 930,000 empty
homes around the UK, with some 4.5 million people still waiting on
housing lists, bad news for those looking for
property to rent in Bournemouth.
David Ireland, chief executive at charity Empty Homes, said that
landlords need to take the responsibility, and seize the
opportunity to get these homes back on the market.
"If you have got housing that is lying empty and it is not doing
anything then it makes sense to try and provide those properties to
the people who need them," he added.
